NEW CASTLE, IN. Lead recreation specialist, Kurnie Nickson, used The Art of Learning and the game of chess to educate prison inmates about the learning and decision-making process to enable them to make better choices in prison and, upon their release, outside, so as to avoid repeat incarceration. The inmates working with the book “love it and wrote about how it and chess benefited them,” says Kurnie. She passed the book on to the Assistant Warden who, after reading it, expressed much enthusiasm for its concepts.
