LINCOLN, NE-By using The Art of Learning in a summer talent development course with graduate students in education who are primarily educators, Professor Ken Kiewra who teaches in the Department of Educational Psychology is providing his students with valuable insights about talent development and helping them develop their personal abilities as well as those of their students by cultivating an understanding of the ways in which we can maximize expression of talent. He has been using the book for some time in other courses and has created interesting assignments that lead students toward a probing analysis of learning and performance strategies.

TURNING POINT LEARNING CENTER

Ginger Lewman, a teacher at the Turning Point Learning Center, spearheaded a site for organizing, connecting, and housing thoughts focused on The Art of Learning. Lewman says, “This is not a “schooly” project where we evaluate the literary aspects of the book, but instead ponder and consider the applications of Josh’s experiences and match them up to our own real and potential opportunities.”

ROBINSON HIGH SCHOOL IB PROGRAM

TAMPA, FL. Elizabeth Arizu, a guidance counselor at Robinson High School shared The Art of Learning with 25 of her fellow counselors, teachers, and administrators. As a result, English teacher Kenneth Hawkins worked with The Art of Learning in his IB Inquiry Skills class. Their intention is to launch a school-wide program. Says Kenneth: “In this book, which uses a first-person voice, my students have someone to whom they can relate, someone who experiences travails and gains a specific understanding of how to triumph over them. Mendham High School IB Program

MENDHAM, NJ. Dr. Kathy Kremins merged The Art of Learning with Mendham High’s International Baccalaureate Theory of Knowledge course.

Seventy students participated in this pilot program. Many passionately discussed The Art of Learning in an online forum and wrote inspiring essays about the material. At the end of the program, the JW Foundation had the honor of meeting with the class. Josh spoke to the students and then held a more intimate discussion with a smaller group. This collaboration touched on everything from what it means to be a learner in life to a vision for the future of education.

National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC)

WASHINGTON, D.C. There are an estimated 3,000,000 gifted children in the U.S.. and the 8,000+ members of the NAGC work on behalf of these students. We donated books to the attendees of their 2008 national convention and Josh was the featured interview article in the association’s back-to-school issue of ‘Teaching for High Potential’. We worked closely throughout the year with the NAGC and their state affiliates to ensure a large turn-out at the November 2009 convention where Josh delivered the keynote address and garnered a standing ovation as well as a robust attendance at his follow-up Q & A session. Logandale Middle School

CHICAGO, IL. Psychologist and SENG President, Dr. Rosina Gallagher, led a parent workshop in this underserved Chicago-based Middle School inMarch 2009 that focused on The Art of Learning and the lessons it provides for optimizing performance. The bi-lingual workshop facilitator (the majority of the parents were Spanish-speaking) presented a PowerPoint presentation and a quiz with the intention of generating a lively interactive discussion about the book’s ideas and instilling new insights. Parents received a copy of the book in their language of choice to enable them to integrate the principles into their kids’ daily lives.
